Historical Note

Founded by Anthony Charles Cazenove, who established himself as a merchant in Alexandria in 1798. He later partnered with his son-in-law, William Collins Gardner. It was later run by William Gardner Cazenove in partnership with Cassius F. Lee before being ruined by the Civil War.

Originally a dry goods store, it developed into a larger import-export company.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a large ledger book containing account information from Cazenove and Co. for the years leading up to the Civil War. Accounts for partners William Gardner Cazenove and Cassius F. Lee are marked differently.

A typed index of the ledger is available in the accopanying folder, as well was a volume of Alexandria History containing an article on the ledger's identification and historical context. This article is also available online.
