Biographical / Historical

The Washington Society first met on January 14, 1800, exactly one month after the death of George Washington. The group raised money for schools and celebrated Washington’s birthday once a year, among other activities. In 1927, William B. McGroarty and Charles Callahan reorganized the Society and began circulating their history to several Alexandria men, and shortly thereafter began holding lectures similar to those held earlier by the Society. The Society is currently dormant.
