Website of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Alexandria, Virginia. Founded in 1795, the Basilica of Saint Mary was the first Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of Virginia and West Virginia. Today, the Basilica of Saint Mary continues to be an active parish community with 54 apostolate groups, 400 parishioners, 18 lay staff members, and 3 full-time priests. In 2020, the Basilica of Saint Mary celebrated 225 years of parish life

Content Description From the Collection: These papers reflect Armistead Boothe's advocacy of civil rights legislation, and his political activity with such issues as public schools, transportation, segregation and other political issues in Virginia, especially during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Personal papers in this collection relate to family matters such as Gardner Boothe's courtship of Eleanor Carr and to Armistead Boothe's school and military experiences. The collection contains photographs and negatives predominantly of historic Alexandria buildings and civic life from the 1910’s to the 1940’s. A small number of prints are from the late 19th century. The collection is made up of black and white prints and acetate negatives, with a small number of glass plate negatives and glass lantern slides. The collection has been split into two series.

Content Description From the Collection: This collection contains school papers, clippings, and memorabilia beginning with the Leonardo Grade and Grammar School (location unknown) and the Groveton Elementary School of Fairfax County, Virginia. Other series include a publication called the "Virginia 4-H Club Letter" and newspapers of Lee-Jackson High School and Mount Vernon High School from 1937-1971.
