Scope Note: Parker-Gray School opened in 1920 teaching grades 1 thru 8. In 1936 it graduated its first high school class. In 1965 the last class of Parker-Gray High School graduated. During the desegregation of the City of Alexandria’s public schools, Parker-Gray was reassigned as a middle school. Parker-Gray School finally closed its doors in 1979.

Over 2,500 professional photographs taken by Murphy capture members of Alexandria’s African American community and local events.
