Scope Note: Parker-Gray School opened in 1920 teaching grades 1 thru 8. In 1936 it graduated its first high school class. In 1965 the last class of Parker-Gray High School graduated. During the desegregation of the City of Alexandria’s public schools, Parker-Gray was reassigned as a middle school. Parker-Gray School finally closed its doors in 1979.

Content Description This collection documents the professional photography business of Elrich W. Murphy. Over 2,500 professional photographs taken by Murphy capture members of Alexandria’s African American community and local events. Images of Murphy’s family and friends were taken primarily by Murphy, but there are also family photographs taken by other people.
